New Content Exclusive Ideas: Q & A with Soles

QUESTIONS AND ANSWER CONTENT WITH SOLES

I thought it would be interesting in my blog as a revamp to start this page with some Q&A content. I have asked if they wouldn’t mind to be part of a Q & A sessions with me, they agreed.

You may or may not know the man who produced the popular song “Love Will Have Its Sacrifices” for the popular webseries by Smokebomb Entertainment in affiliation with Verve Girl TV and Shift 2 production Carmilla. Ever since doing this song, the man has gone on to produced his own music and has now produced for two of the actresses who are on the popular webseries. Kaitlyn Alexander and Natasha Negovanlis. I don’t think at the time, this man who wrote and produced this song had any idea that the Carmilla Series fans would get him include him and Ms. Negovanlis for the Shorty awards nominations. As a fan to the series myself, I thought I would ask Soles a few questions to my blog which may interest fans not only about the Carmilla series, but his music career.

Question:
What’s the most interesting thing that you’ve recorded or produced as an artist?
Answer:
My latest EP the Signal was a lot of fun and a lot of work to make. We spent a year recording these songs. Trying to get spontaneous, inspired performances by having the players improvise a lot of their parts. I learned a lot. Can’t wait to make the next one.

Question:
What was the experience like when you were asked to record a song for a webseries? Did you ever think that it would be a popular song when you did it at the time?
Answer:
Steph, Carmilla’s producer, asked me to write the theme as scripts for Carmilla were starting to be finalized. I got together with my writing partner Max Sandler and we spent a Saturday afternoon writing sample ideas. We knew as soon as we wrote what is now Love Will Have It’s Sacrifices that that would be what they went with. We had no idea it would become what it has. I used to be the first view and the first one to ‘like’ every episode!

Question:
How have you’ve grown as a musician, producer and entertainer in the industry?
Answer:
By just getting better. Always trying to outdo the last thing. Always saying yes and trying to find the next stepping stone. It’s really that simple.

Question:
How is the feeling of being known online and sometimes in person?
Answer:
Well I’ve yet to be recognized in person. Actually that’s not true – there was once at the Shorty Awards. But it’s a cool and odd feeling to be able to tweet something or post on tumblr and have people respond to it. Not feeling like you’re shouting into an empty room is pretty cool.

Question:
When you wrote “Love Has Its Sacrifices” what was the idea for the song?
Answer:
We had read the scripts and knew what we were dealing with. We wanted something moody and haunting but that it’s core was still a pop song. We wanted people to want to listen to it.

Question:
When you record songs for either yourself or other artists; what has been the creative challenge for you or for anyone else you produced?
Answer:
The hard part is always getting to the core of what you, or the person you’re working with wants out of the project. For me personally it’s trying to get what I hear in my head recorded. In the case of recording the Vanlis demos it was trying to get to the bottom of what Natasha wanted, what she wanted it to sound like and get that for her. I didn’t write or play on those songs but I did help create the sonic mood she was looking for and that was a lot of fun.

Question:
How has the experience of dealing with Creampuffs in person or online been like?
Answer:
Again, it’s cool to not be shouting into an empty room. It’s like being in an exclusive club haha.

Question:
What has the most interesting part being affiliated with the Carmilla webseries fandom?
Answer:
It’s been great being a part of something that is so important to so many people. It’s more than just a web series. It stands for something, it means something. That’s really special. I’m excited to be affiliated with it even in my small way.

Question:
What is the strangest and best experience since writing the theme to Carmilla?
Answer:
Being nominated for a Shorty and heading down to New York with Natasha, Steph and Carrie from Smokebomb and my writing partner Max. I was there for a reason. You Creampuffs quite literally brought me there. It was pretty surreal to go to an awards show, with a special pass, surrounded by incredibly talented people and feel a part of it all. To be there for a reason.

Question:
As a producer and artist, do you hope to possibly write or produce for other webseries or TV shows?
Answer:
I not only hope to but actively already do work on other web series. I wrote the theme music (with my partner Max Sandler) for the Smokebomb series Ms. Labelled. Additionally, I mix the audio for a lot of series including Carmilla, Ms. Labelled, I Do and hopefully more in the near future.

Question:
What is your dream goal as being a producer, song writer and artist?
Answer:
To be able to sustain myself purely with music would be a dream for me. I work as a recording engineering right now, which I love. But the idea of coming into a studio every day to record my own music, or getting up on stage every night, and having that pay the bills. That would be nice.

Question:
If you could work with your dream artist(s), who would it be and why?
Answer:
That’s a tough one. Maybe Billy Joel. I’ve been listening to Billy Joel since I was in the womb. My favourite record of all time is ‘The Stranger’. In fact, my song ‘Portraits of a City’ is my personal take on a song from that album called ‘Scenes from an Italian Restaurant’. Or maybe John Mayer. John is the reason I play the kind of music I do. I picked up an electric guitar because of his song ‘Covered In Rain’. In fact, David LaBruyere who played on that live album as well as many of his studio albums has played on all 3 of my EPs so that was really exciting for me. But working with John would be pretty amazing.

Question:
Also, if anyone wants to find your work, where would they go about finding it and could they make a purchase of your album online or in store?

Answer:
You can find everything at soles.bandcamp.com. My latest record ‘The Signal’ is on iTunes and all the streaming platforms.
